Hayashi's unique method

Mr. Hayashi arranges the colors from opaque to translucent glazes and washes, by using oil paints, resin varnishes. Another important element in his work is metallic leaf. Gold, silver, aluminum, copper leaf and Dutch metal, as well as bronzing powders, bring unexpected effect in his finish, one of a major ingridient of his work.
Skillfully applied, the metalic materials are interwoven through compositions adding illumination and contrast to the network of pattern and texture. Now imbeded on the wood panel, the metals are then transformed with the application of acids and color, which subdue their harshness and enriche their patina.
By rubbing and polishing through the many layers, the artist reveals some of the color and texture that are otherwise hidden beneath the over layers. Layers of varnish are then applied to ensure protection and add visual depth to the object.
Hayashi applies resin varnishes in lieu of 'urushi', the natural lacquer. After the varnish has dried the surface is polished once more, with fine powders and nonabrasive wax rending it smooth and lustrous, to complete the whole process.
